Amlogic A80 devices are coming

Things are moving fast and if 2 weeks ago devices with Rockchip’s RK3288 chipset would bring the biggest bang for your buck, now that’s no longer true.

This week the first devices with Amlogic A80 surfaced, starting with Tronsmart Draco AW80.

So what’s all the fuss about?
– Amlogic A80 is a powered by an octa core CPU (4 Cortex 15 cores clocked at ~2Ghz and 4 Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1320Mhz)
– the GPU is PowerVR G6230 with no less than 64 cores – reports are coming with huge Antutu rankings (if you’re into that sort of thing)
– Gigabit Lan, USB 3.0
– it is said to have Linux support, which would make it very interesting.

There’s a problem though: all devices that were announced so far only had HDMI 1.4, so for those that want [email protected] should stick with Rockchip RK3288 devices… for now.

Devices already announced:

– Ugoos A8
– Tronsmart Draco AW80
– Rikomagic MK80

as you can see, the Chinese manufacturers are not very inspired when it comes to pick a name, all of them are using the chipset’s name one way or another 🙂

My advice?
If you’re not in a hurry, you should wait.
This new chipset will bring good performance for roughly the same price, and most likely the proces for RK3288 devices will drop as a result.
But also there are reports that the GPU does not use all 64 cores yet, and there are inherent bugs that all new platforms have.
Also, wait for a clear announcement regardinf A80 and Linux support.
